Top WordPress must have plugins

10 WordPress Plugins We Install on Every New Site

After building over 20 WordPress sites across industries — from fintech platforms and courier systems to wellness studios and affiliate content sites — we’ve developed a standard plugin stack that goes on every single build.

Not 30 plugins. Not whatever looks good on a YouTube tutorial. Just 10 carefully chosen tools that handle SEO, performance, security, forms, backups, and more — without slowing the site down or creating maintenance headaches later.

Here they are, in the order we install them.

1. Rank Math SEO

What it does: Handles all on-page SEO, sitemaps, schema markup, and Google Search Console integration.

We switched from Yoast to Rank Math a few years ago and haven’t looked back. The free version gives you more functionality than Yoast Pro — including keyword rank tracking, schema types, and a built-in 404 monitor. It’s cleaner, faster, and the UI is significantly better for clients who need to manage their own content.

Why we use it: It’s the most powerful free SEO plugin available right now, and it integrates directly with GA4 and Search Console out of the box.

2. Elementor

What it does: Page builder for designing and building pages visually without code.

Elementor is our page builder of choice, paired with the Astra theme on every build. The free version is powerful enough for most projects — but Elementor Pro unlocks Theme Builder (custom headers, footers, archives), popup builder, and WooCommerce integration, which we use on most client sites.

Why we use it: Speed of build, consistency of output, and client-friendliness. Clients can update their own content without touching code.

3. WP Rocket

What it does: Caching, performance optimisation, lazy loading, and CDN integration.

WP Rocket is the gold standard for WordPress performance. It handles page caching, browser caching, CSS and JS minification, image lazy loading, and database cleanup — all from a clean, beginner-friendly interface. No other plugin comes close for the combination of ease and results.

Why we use it: Google’s Core Web Vitals are a ranking factor. A site without proper caching is leaving SEO performance on the table. WP Rocket consistently improves scores on the first install.

4. Wordfence Security

What it does: Firewall, malware scanner, login protection, and real-time threat intelligence.

<cite index=”2-1″>WordPress sites remain a frequent target for hackers, and security plugins help seal off common entry points that automated attacks detect far faster than most teams anticipate.</cite> Wordfence is our go-to. The free version includes a full firewall, malware scanner, and brute-force login protection. The premium version adds real-time threat intelligence and country blocking.

Why we use it: We’ve seen too many client sites get compromised from weak security. Wordfence goes on every site on day one — non-negotiable.

5. UpdraftPlus

What it does: Automated backups to cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox, S3, and more).

Your hosting provider’s backup is not enough. UpdraftPlus creates scheduled automated backups and stores them offsite — so if something goes wrong, you’re restoring from a clean copy rather than starting from scratch. We set it to back up daily and keep 7 copies minimum.

Why we use it: <cite index=”1-1″>Always store at least one backup copy off-site like Google Drive or Dropbox.</cite> UpdraftPlus makes this automatic and effortless.

6. WP Mail SMTP

What it does: Fixes WordPress email delivery by routing emails through a proper SMTP provider.

By default, WordPress sends emails using PHP mail — which means most of them end up in spam or don’t arrive at all. WP Mail SMTP connects your site to a real email provider (we use Zoho, but Gmail, SendGrid, and Mailgun all work). This is essential for contact form submissions, order confirmations, and password reset emails to actually reach people.

Why we use it: Every client site needs reliable email delivery. This is the fix — install it on day one.

7. Forminator

What it does: Drag-and-drop form builder for contact forms, quote requests, surveys, and more.

We moved to Forminator from WPForms and Contact Form 7 because it offers more form types in the free version — including polls, quizzes, and payment forms. It integrates well with email marketing tools and CRMs, and the conditional logic works reliably.

Why we use it: It handles everything from simple contact forms to multi-step quote request forms without needing a paid upgrade for most use cases.

8. ShortPixel Image Optimizer

What it does: Compresses and converts images to WebP format automatically on upload.

Images are almost always the biggest drag on WordPress performance. ShortPixel compresses images on upload without visible quality loss, converts them to WebP (which loads 25–35% faster than JPEG), and can bulk-process your existing media library. The free plan gives you 100 credits/month — enough for most small sites.

Why we use it: Paired with WP Rocket, ShortPixel takes page speed to another level. It’s the combination we use on every build.

9. All-in-One WP Migration

What it does: Exports and imports your entire WordPress site as a single file — database, plugins, themes, and all.

This is our go-to tool for migrating sites between servers, creating staging environments, and making full-site backups before major changes. It’s dead simple — one click to export, one click to import. The free version handles sites up to 512MB; most small business sites fit within that.

Why we use it: We migrate sites regularly. This plugin has saved us hours that manual database exports used to cost.

10. Google Site Kit

What it does: Connects your WordPress site to Google Analytics 4, Search Console, PageSpeed Insights, and AdSense — all from your dashboard.

Site Kit is Google’s official WordPress plugin and the cleanest way to connect GA4 without touching code. It also pulls Search Console data (impressions, clicks, rankings) and PageSpeed scores directly into your WordPress dashboard so you can see how the site is performing without logging into multiple platforms.

Why we use it: It simplifies the analytics setup for clients and keeps the most important performance data in one place.

A Note on Plugin Count

<cite index=”1-1″>Quality matters more than quantity — try to keep under 20 active plugins and remove those you don’t use.</cite> This list gives you exactly 10. That’s intentional. Every plugin you add is a potential performance drain, a security risk, and a compatibility issue waiting to happen. We’ve tried dozens more — these 10 survived.
